The Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona Dial

Rolex is indeed the most in-demand and universally recognised brand in the retail as well as the secondary market for luxury timepieces. However, the higher demand signifies that you can ‘sell my Rolex watch’, or sell your Rolex watch more efficiently in comparison to selling other fine watches.

Rolex today makes nearly all components in-house. But this was not the case always. The fact is that the components come together only at the final production stage under one brand name. Consequently, the landscape of Switzerland was once sprinkled with specialised bracelet manufacturers, movement makers, case makers, engravers, dial producers, as well as other specialities for many years.

Today, let’s take a closer look at the manufacturer and company behind the iconic Rolex Daytona ‘Paul Newman’ dial design!
The ‘Exotic’ Dials
In 1919, the Jean Singer & Cie was the famous dial supplier for some of the top brands in the watch industry. The client list of Singer included brands such as Omega, Tudor, Heuer and also, Rolex. However, Rolex also sourced dials from other dial providers, including Beyeler, Stern, and many others.

Singer manufactured dials for many Rolex watches like the Rolex Submariners, Daytona and Datejust. All these dials created for Rolex timepieces come with a carved Singer logo on the back. Ideally, the most popular dial designs manufactured by the Singer workshops were officially once known as ‘exotic dials’ that were equipped into Rolex watches.

These ‘exotic dials’ were designed for the Daytona chronographs beginning in the 1960s. While the famous actor Paul Newman wore a Daytona with exotic dial, they came to be known more commonly as ‘Paul Newman’ dials. However, the significant aspects that differentiate a standard Daytona dial from a ‘Paul Newman’ dial include hash marks and square tips in sub-dials, an Art Deco numeral style font, and the presence of 15/30/45/60 numerals in the seconds sub-dial.

Singer’s ‘exotic dials’ created for the Rolex Daytona watches have two interesting aspects to note.

First, the ‘exotic dials’ were not successful at all as most buyers opted for the standard dials. Maybe, these dials proved to be a little more tropical for that time.

However, the vintage Rolex Daytona timepieces with ‘Paul Newman’ dials are indeed the most expensive and sought-after vintage watches in the pre-owned market.

Second, Singer’s exotic dials were not exclusive to Rolex. While Singer consisted of a long client list, similar dials were equipped into other timepieces of the brands like Wakmann, Vulcain and Nevada.

Today, one of the last dial producers in Switzerland is Jean Singer & Cie. Rolex employed the dial maker, Beyeler in 2000 that now designs all Rolex dials in-house. Although Rolex and Singer may not have business together any longer, their historically significant relationship was responsible for the most expensive watch in the world.
